USDA is pushing back on new recommendations from the World Health Organization regarding the use of antibiotics in agriculture. The WHO now wants veterinarians to quit using antibiotics that are most critical for use in human health. It also opposes the use of antibiotics to prevent disease in healthy animals. USDA Acting Chief Scientist Dr. Chavonda Jacobs Young said the WHO guidelines are not supported by sound science. The Food and Drug Administration is working collaboratively with U. S. stakeholders to protect the use of medically important antibiotics. The WHO guidelines are stricter than U. S. regulations. Good Relationships Take Time. Good relationships are important in trading with others, which is why USDA led a trade delegation to India last week. North Dakota Agriculture Commissioner Doug Gohering says India is the upcoming China. The country has a younger population. Goehring says there is good opportunity for North Dakota farmers, but establishing good relations takes time. He says the big challenge with India is duties and establishing non tariff trade barriers for food. Its trying to get through to them on a different level to understand it may not be a good thing when you try to do those things, like requiring phyto on a product stating the pest isnt there, when that pest doesnt even exist in our region, and impose your will on others when theres no need for us to go through hoops. Pont will acquire the rights to develop and commercialize seed applied products to other seed companies and ag retailers. The initial focus is on corn and soybean seed applied products, but the intent is to extend the collaboration into other crops. USDA Withdraws Biotech Proposal. USDAs Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service has withdrawn its proposal to revamp its rules for biotech crops. These proposed rules were released in January to clarify the regulations for new biotech tools, like the CRISPR gene editing technology. The rule change was announced in the final days of the Obama Administration so it is no surprise the Trump Administration wants to take another look at these regulations. USDA plans to reconnect with stakeholders to find a new approach. Hold Placed on Doud Nomination. Another key Trump Administration nominee is apparently having his confirmation held up. Agri Pulse is reporting Arizona Senator Jeff Flake has placed a hold on Gregg Douds nomination to serve as the countrys chief agricultural negotiator. Flake apparently has an issue with the way vegetable crops are being handled in the current NAFTA negotiations and is holding up Douds nomination for leverage. Doud has received the approval of the Senate Finance Committee, but still needs a vote before the full Senate. Doud isnt the only one dealing with this move by a Republican senator. Iowa Agriculture Secretary Bill Northeys nomination for an undersecretary position at USDA is also in limbo. ND, SD and MN Farmers Place in Wheat Yield Contest.
